The Growth of Beauty
This is the second pattern I have written in the ‘Beauty’ series of patterns, in memory of my beautiful Beauty who crossed the Rainbow Bridge at nearly 14 years old (she was a Doberman/German Shepherd cross I rescued from the council pound at 3 months old). The design of this pattern came from my previous pattern ‘Flowers for Beauty’, I took the flower and created a motif, hence the name, chosen by my son.
About the Pattern
This is another versatile pattern that can be made into either a poncho or wrap. It is a square-ish motif made in the round and is joined to the previous motif in the final round. I have included various shapes that you can use to make the pattern.
The pattern was designed using Scheepjes Whirl (a 4ply/fingering yarn), but any yarn can be used with corresponding hook size (I would opt for a larger hook than you would usually use for the yarn in order to give the poncho/wrap more drape.) Gradient yarns such as Scheepjes Whirl are perfect for this project; I love the way the ponchos look different depending on whichever way you decide to wear it.
The stitches used in the pattern are:
US Terms – chain, single crochet, double crochet, double crochet 2 together, double crochet 3 together, picot (for optional border)
British Terms – chain, double crochet, treble crochet, treble crochet 2 together, treble crochet 3 together, picot (for optional border)
Included in the 25 page pdf are:
the pattern in its simplest form called ‘Just the Pattern’,
a walk-through tutorial with lots of pictures and comments,
a computer drawn chart.
I have written the pattern in both American terms and British terms so please be sure to purchase the correct one.
I have made up 3 ponchos (see pics), two using just 1 cake of Scheepjes Whirl (Jumpin Jaffa Pop and Blackforest Zinger) and a larger hook to make it looser and more flowy, and the other one using 1 whirl (Red Velvet Sunrise) and 1.5 contrasting whirlettes (Ice). I used a smaller hook for this one. The single whirl poncho has an asymmetrical neckline and shape, and the whirl and whirlette poncho has a more traditional neckline and shape. I have done slightly different borders on each poncho, for which I include instructions.
I hope you enjoy the pattern, and I look forward to seeing your completed items; please use #thegrowthofbeauty if posting on social media.
