Flyway Sweater
The Flyway Sweater
Flyway is a drop-shoulder, boxy, cropped sweater. Yum. Casting on at the back neck, it’s knit from the top down, flat, before picking up stitches at the shoulders, then knitting the front flat until you join under the arms and start your colorwork. All colorwork is knit in the round. You will pick up stitches at the armhole and knit in the round to the cuff. You will also pick up stitches at the collar to finish the neckline ribbing in the round. You will have to seam an inch or so under the arm, and you will do it fabulously.
Flyway initially started out with an obsession over the Delectable Mountain quilt block, which is fair because mountains are delectable. But after finishing the equally delectable sweater (ok, I’m done with that word now), my delectable (oops) husband suggested this name. A flyway is a flight path migratory birds use to travel from their mating grounds to their winter homes. In the US there are 4 main flyways spanning from coast to coast. These birds will travel thousands of miles (over many delectable mountains) to visit the same wintering area, and some will even travel back to the same exact nests every single year.
Let’s be the kind of humans that protect these vulnerable flyways from development and habitat destruction.
