This pattern was originally developed for a friend as a visual representation of the ties of marriage and kinship within her immediate family tree. It was an interesting project to work on and the result is a lovely hat with a variety of gorgeous cable textures!

The hat incorporates elements from Irish clan Aran cables. These elements have been adapted for the hat pattern.

The left and right ropes: represent luck and a wish for a good fishing harvest.
The diamond pattern: represents wealth.
The honeycomb: represents work, plenty, and is considered lucky.
The blackberry: represents the Holy Trinity and sometimes nature.

The pattern
The pattern is provided in three different formats: pattern repeats for each cable element, charts, and written instructions.

Suggested Yarn
Approximately 210 yards in a Worsted weight yarn.
Samples were made with Malabrigo Rios in the Cirrus Gray and Ivy colorways

Needles
Needles: Size US 6/4 mm 16”/40cm circular needles
Size US 7/4.5 mm 16”/40cm circular needles
US 7/5 mm DPNs or 32”/80cm (or larger) circulars for magic loop

Gauge
20 sts and 28 rows = 4 in/10 cm in stockinette stitch knit in the round on the larger needles

Finished Size
The hat measures 17 in/43 cm circumference and 9.5 in/24 cm height before blocking. The ribbing and cabling have a lot of stretch so the hat comfortably fits most adult-size heads. (21” circumference and larger). Try to block the hat without stretching out the ribbing for a better fit.

The finished measurements are based on a beanie hat worked with 4” of ribbing or a slouchy hat worked with 1” of ribbing.

Techniques
Knitting, purling, knitting through the back loop, cable knitting, increases and decreases including (p1, k1, p1) into one stitch, m1L, k2tog, p2tog, k3tog.
