Frances is a t-shirt-style sweater combining bands of lace and Fair Isle. It has turned hems, neckband and cuffs for structure and is designed to be made in Jamiesons of Shetland Spindrift jumper weight yarn. The inspiration for my design came from a lovely lady, Frances, who is a member of our makkin group. I’ve known Frances since I was a teenager when she was my dinner lady at school!

Frances is often seen wearing a combined lace and Fair Isle cardigan which she knits for herself from memory – never using a pattern! – and usually accessorised by a lovely sparkly brooch. For my design, I decided to combine lace and Fair Isle, but used a more contemporary motif for the stranded colourwork. I decided to use a retro colour palette of mauve and purple in homage to Frances, and colours similar to these can also be seen used together in fabric created by Bernat Klein, who I am also a huge fan of!
