Fingerless Mittens with Colorwork
A simple fingerless mitten pattern featuring colorwork motifs inspired by nature. These mittens are perfect for using leftover yarn, combining different colors, or reversing the main and contrasting colors between the two hands.
The pattern uses one strand of Sandnes Garn Tynn Peer Gynt held together with one strand of Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair throughout. But you may use any fingering-weight + mohair or simply one strand of sport-weight yarn.
Materials
Yarn: Tynn Peer Gynt and Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair
Needles: 2.5 mm circular or double-pointed needles for a size medium womens hands (fits most). Use a size 2.0 mm or 3.0 mm for a smaller or larger fit, respectively.
Yarn colors: Main color (MC) and contrasting color(s) (CC)
Notions: Stitch marker and tapestry needle
Construction: Worked in the round
Yarn consumption: Approximately 20 g per mitten, including 4 g of colorwork. 40 grams of yarn in total for two mittens/one pair. This pattern includes charts explaining how much of each yarn is used in both grams and meters, so you can use up every single scrap.
GAUGE
30 sts x 38 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm after blocking.
Needle size is only a guide. If you get too many stitches on 10 cm, change to a larger needle size. If you get too few stitches on 10 cm, change to a smaller needle size.
CIRCUMFERENCE
Knitting needles 2.0- (2.5)-3.0 = 147-(168)-189 mm
These mittens are ideal for using up leftover yarn from previous knitting projects.
The yarn consumption charts show the approximate amounts needed for one mitten, allowing you to plan your colors individually and make the most of even small scraps.
Since each mitten requires only around 4 g of yarn for the colorwork sections, you can easily experiment with different contrasting colors without needing full skeins.
You could also reverse the colors between the two mittens, using the main color of one mitten as the contrasting color of the other. This makes each pair unique while helping you use the very last bits of your favorite yarns.
