Friendly Blanket
If you’ve ever wanted to whip up blankets without using a pattern, but were somewhat reluctant (or scared ) to start from scratch, I have a solution for you.
I made a step-by-step pattern for a basic blanket that I call a Friendly Blanket.
In just a few hours of mindless, relaxed knitting, you can make a versatile blanket that will keep anyone cozy in pretty much any situation – a road trip, an evening by the lake, a night at a campground, or just a short coffee break in the fresh air.
The pattern is highly adjustable, and you can use it to make a blanket in any size with any chunky yarn you have on hand.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Width – 90 cm / 35.5”
Length – 180 cm / 70”
See “Variations” section on the pattern page for the instructions on how to change the size of the blanket.
YARN
750 m / 825 yds of any chunky yarn that has the equivalent of 50 m / 55 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz.
To make the blanket shown in the photos, I used Knitca Wool Slub yarn (100% wool) in Vintage colour.
NEEDLES
12 mm (US size 17) circular needles or single-pointed needles that are at least 30 cm / 12” long.
NOTIONS
1 wool needle.
GAUGE
9 stitches x 13 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in seed stitch.
As this project is quite loose and has a fair amount of stretch, it is not necessary to make a swatch before you start the project.
On the other hand, the swatch will help you get the feel of the texture of the fabric, and see how the colour you picked works with the texture of the blanket. So I encourage you to take a moment and knit a swatch to make sure you like the texture and the colour you’ve chosen.
NOTES
We’ll cast on stitches for the width of the blanket and work up to knit the length.
Underlined techniques are available as separate tutorials. Click the underlined name of the technique to read and watch how to use that technique, or watch the full knitalong available on the pattern page.
