The lace pattern for Full of Joy was created using Naomi Parkhurst’s system for embedding words into knitting patterns. For this shawl I used the word joy. I wanted a simple stitch pattern that could be used to create an overall lace pattern. The result is an easy and relaxing knitting project that looks far more complex and complicated when blocked.

This shawl is knit from the bottom up and can be worked until it is just the size you want. It works well with solid, semi-solid, gradient, tonal, or lightly speckled yarn. It is perfect for a single skein of luxury fingering weight yarn or two skeins of dk or worsted. The sample used a single skein of Hopper Fingering from The Fiberists:

Materials used for the sample:

Yarn - 1 skein of Hopper Fingering from The Fiberists, 398 yds, in Dark Orange, 60% super wash merino, 20% yak, 20% silk

Needles - US size 4 (3.5 mm), 32” circular

Gauge is not overly important as long as you are happy with the fabric. If you want to try a swatch just cast on and begin the pattern to see if you like the fabric. Adjust needles as needed.

Finished size - 52”/132 cm across the top x 24”/61 cm deep

Miscellaneous- darning needle for weaving in ends
