Velvet Sofa is a large, comfy, top-down shawl meant to warm you on a crisp fall day or a cold winter night. It uses a lace pattern called Hobbit Day created by Naomi Parkhurst in honor of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins’ shared birthday. Named after one of the colorways of Brioche DK used in the sample, Velvet Sofa might be a little fancy for Bilbo or Frodo, but I feel like a comfortable velvet sofa would be something both of them would enjoy ;)

The sample used two skeins of each color of Brioche DK from Kim Dyes Yarn. Find all of her colorways here:

This shawl is worked from the top down and can easily be made larger or smaller. Directions are provided for the sample with options for changing the size. Please note if you change the size of the shawl your yarn requirements may also change.

Materials
Yarn - Brioche DK by Kim Dyes Yarn, 280 yards (256 m), 2 skeins each in two different colors. The sample used approximately 420 yds/384 m of Velvet Sofa (Color A) and 320 yds/293 m of Malted Eggs (Color B).

Needles - US size 6 (4.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge below. 32” circular recommended. If you are using a yarn different from the sample, use a needle that gives you a fabric you like.

Gauge - 20 sts by 24 rows over 4” blocked in lace pattern. Gauge is not overly important as long as you are happy with the fabric.

Finished size - 62” across the top edge and 32” deep

Miscellaneous- 2 stitch markers for written directions; cable needle (opt), darning needle for weaving in ends
