NET PROFITS FROM THIS PATTERN WILL DIRECTLY BENEFIT FURIOUS FLOWER POETRY CENTER AT JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

Overview
When I was an undergraduate student in the Honors Program at James Madison University, I was incredibly fortunate that Dr. Joanne Gabbin, founder of the Furious Flower Poetry Center, was the head of the honors program. She helped guide me through the development and presentation of my honors thesis, and offered the sort of powerful influence that became part of me.
Furious Flower just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Created to spotlight, promote, and preserve black poets and their poetry, its programming is powerful and truly unique.

In direct response to the soul wrenching mistreatment of black Americans, and the resulting critically important movements focused on pushing the causes of racial equality and anti-racism, I decided all of the net profits from this pattern will benefit Furious Flower Poetry Center. As an artist, poet, and designer I believe in the power of art and word to capture essences of moments in time critical to future reflection, understanding, and progress.

I am so grateful to Sandi Rosner for donating her tech editing time to this project, and to my beautiful friend Delores for modeling. Love you both!

To facilitate ease of administration, I will make quarterly donations to Furious Flower Poetry Center.

SKILL LEVEL:
Easy

MATERIALS
Yarn:
Color A: 425 yards of fingering weight yarn. This is the golden yellow in the sample. We used Tough Sock from Sweet Georgia for the sample for this color.

Color B: 400 yards of fingering weight yarn. This is the dark variegated purple in the sample. We used Lolabean Yarn Co. Bean Sprout 80/20 fingering weight yarn for the sample for this color.

Contrast Colors: 450 yards total in a mix of colors. Gather up all of your scraps and bits of fingering weight yarn. This is your chance to use up stash, have fun playing with color, and get creative while you create a wrap that is completely original!

Needles:
US 4 3.5mm) straight or circular needles

Notions:
Tapestry needle

GAUGE
26 sts and 40 rows = 4” in Garter Stitch, after blocking.
While gauge is not critical for this project, if you work at a different gauge it will change both the size of your finished shawl and the amount of yarn required.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Length: 72” along the edge; approximately 86” from point to point
Width: 14”

NOTE
This shawl is a parallelogram, knit from end to end.
Slipped stitches are slipped as if to purl.

Throughout this pattern, I’ve simply referred to Contrast Color. Use this as an opportunity to play! Use as many or as few Contrast Colors as you please. Change and arrange them however you like.
