Gambit Cardi is a classic cardigan with a slightly tailored feel and a subtle nod to mid-60s styling. Easy stockinette is framed by a cable button band and touches of seed stitch at the collar, cuffs, and hem, all finished with tidy i-cord edges.

Knit top down and worked flat making it a great first garment project. The DK weight fabric has structure while still feeling comfortable to layer, and the elbow length sleeves make it easy to wear across seasons.

It pairs just as easily with a dress as it does with everyday basics, giving you a polished layer to wear on repeat.

Design Details

Gambit Cardi has a gently shaped, close fitting silhouette that sits neatly at the shoulders and skims the body. The cable button band frames the front opening and naturally draws the eye upward toward the collar.

Seed stitch at the neckline, cuffs, and hem adds subtle texture and structure. The elbow length sleeves balance the proportions and give the sweater a clean, wearable shape that layers easily.

Buttons can be spaced to your preference along the cable band, allowing the cardigan to be worn open, partially closed, or fully buttoned without changing the overall look.

Pattern Highlights

  • Top down construction lets you try it on as you go
  • Cable button band provides structure and flexible button placement
  • DK weight yarn keeps the knitting moving
  • Tidy finishing details with seed stitch and i-cord edges

Construction Overview

Gambit Cardi is worked top down and flat.

You begin at the collar, shaping the back neck with German short rows. Yoke increases establish the upper body before separating for the sleeves.

The body continues flat while the cable and seed stitch button band is worked simultaneously. The hem is finished in seed stitch and an i-cord bind off.

Sleeves are picked up and worked in the round with decreases toward the cuff, then finished with seed stitch and i-cord edging.

Yarn Notes

Our sample was knit in Swift Yarns Tweed DK in “Fresh Cut Grass.”
The subtle tweed flecks add a vintage feel and highlight the cables without overpowering them.

Fiber: 85% superwash merino / 15% nep
Yardage: 231 yds (211 m) per 100 g skein

Any DK weight yarn with good stitch definition will work well. Tonal or lightly heathered yarns especially complement the cable band.
