Designed for Cowgirl Yarn’s Fall 2020 KAL, the Gem City Shawl is an asymmetrical triangle shawl that features a medley of garter stitch, stockinette stitch, eyelet lace, knotted openwork, and two-color waffle check. The shawl is knitted flat, and the asymmetrical shape is achieved by decreasing one stitch at the start of all right-side rows and then also increasing two stitches at the end of the same rows. The pattern sequence is knitted three times with each color being substituted by another color in each subsequent iteration. The pattern is rated as Advanced Beginner.

The sample in this pattern uses three skeins of Mountain Meadow Wool Green River Fingering in Pansy, Spruce, and Dove. Using more variegated color ways will create a shawl in which the color shifts are more subtle and blend together more completely.

While this pattern is written using fingering weight yarn and a size 6 needle, it could easily be made with a heavier weight yarn and a larger needle size. You’ll just need to adjust the amount of yarn you have available to use.
