Colorwork cowl of two narwhals crossing their tusks, surrounded by bubbles and waves. The cowl is knit in the round, from the bottom up, is customizable for multiple gauges (sample is in light worsted) and is perfect for any level of colorwork knitter - from beginner to advanced. In addition to a simple pattern, a customizable size and gauge option is included. The “Gender Unicorn of the Sea Cowl” was designed in response to anti-trans legislation being cruelly pushed across the country. All proceeds from the sale of this design in perpetuity (after transaction fees) will be donated to organizations supporting trans communities. As of July 2024, donations are going to Positive Images (https://www.posimages.org). Before that, they supported GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders and the Transgender Education Network of Texas.

Two versions of the pattern are included. Option A is a standard pattern suitable for knitters of all stages, including beginners. Option B is slightly more advanced and fully customizable, with a math worksheet to make repeat decisions based on gauge and desired size. Therefore, many weights of yarn can be used in the Option B version.

Note: Chart A is very large, so a second file with a legal page size version is included. It is exactly the same as the Chart A in the main pattern, and only provided for ease of viewing.

Measurements
22 in circumference x 11 in tall
(Customizable in Option B)

Yarn
2 colors of light worsted or DK weight yarn, 1 skein per color.
The sample is shown in a light worsted gauge, and instructions are included in Option B for modifying the charts based on your gauge and desired size.
Sample shown in Malabrigo Rios, using approximately 160 yards MC (Cosmos/light blue), 75 yards CC (Aniversario/rainbow).

Gauge
21 sts and 24 rounds per 4 in
Gauge is in colorwork in the round, using larger needles, after blocking.
Gauge is not essential for this pattern, but will alter the size and yardage used. See instructions in Option B for modifying colorwork charts.

16”/40 cm or 20”/50cm circular needles in two sizes:
US 6/4.00 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge) for colorwork
