Gentleman's Lozenge
An oldie but goodie! I used ca. 1897 Weldon’s Practical Needlework as my source for this simple but attractive pattern. This version has 10 pattern rows and a multiple of 10 stitches. I love tweed yarns and was glad to find a pattern that would work well with it.
The late Barbara G. Walker had an 8-row, 8-stitch version called “Diamond Brocade” and several other handsome variations in her (first) Treasury of Knitting Patterns, starting on page 30.
The pattern is so visually obvious, you probably won’t need the written pattern for long – just inspect your knitting!
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
70 yards of Wool of the Andes Tweed yarn will make 10 inches of a 40-stitch swatch at gauge.
