My brother-in-law is a professional landscape manager and spends most of his work days outdoors. He loves being outside even at his home where he and my sister own chickens and a garden of herbs and vegetables. He is one of the best men I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. He wears a hat every day of his life – during the summer it’s a ball cap and during the winter it’s usually a beanie. I’ve knit him a new beanie every Christmas for going on 5 years now and he is extremely knit-worthy!

I decided that this year he needed a hat designed in his honor. It’s a simple beanie and completely unisex in design but it has more “flair” than a stockinette hat or even a basic ribbed hat. This design uses a seeded rib stitch that is easy to memorize but the finished product looks a step above a simple beanie.

It’s a great pattern to use with a highly variegated yarn that you are afraid might pool in a way that you don’t want. I hope you enjoy making one for the special person or people in your life!
