DESIGN OVERVIEW AND INSPIRATION

The Gourdgeous MKAL Socks were designed as a mystery knit-along for the SolidSocks Group’s September/October 2026 MKAL. When designing these socks, my overall goal was to design a sock that would be fun, interesting, fall-themed, cozy, and with all of my favorite little details. The colorway I used is “Pumpkin Soup” by JoAnna of Knit Spin Farm, and I like to think that the colorway and pattern name ended up being perfect for the design!

Use the code PUMPKINS to get this pattern for FREE through October 1, 2026.

PATTERN INFORMATION

Difficulty Rating
INTERMEDIATE: It’s a mystery! The pattern is primarily charted.

Recommended Yarn
BFL Nylon Light Fingering by Knit Spin Farm, 75% Bluefaced Leicester wool/25% nylon, 464 yds (424 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g): 1 skein (sample in Pumpkin Soup) OR approximately 464 yds (424 m) light fingering to fingering weight yarn.

Important: This design uses approximately 20% more yarn than comparable sock designs from me. The sample used 82 g, whereas my Crystallography, Chirality, and Wave Function designs used closer to 70-75 g for the samples. Options for adjusting the leg and foot length are included.

This pattern will play nicely with any fingering weight wool/wool blend yarn in solid colorways.

Sizes
48 {56, 64, 72, 80} sts

To fit leg/foot circumference: 5.75-6.75 {6.75-7.75, 7.5-9, 8.5-10, 9.5-11}” (14.6-17.1 {17.1-19.7, 19.1-22.9, 21.6-25.4, 24.1-28} cm)

Finished Measurements
4.25 {5, 5.75, 6.5, 7.25}” (10.8 {12.7, 14.6, 16.5, 18.4} cm) leg circumference, unstretched.
4.75 {5.5, 6.5, 7.25, 8}” (12.1 {14, 16.5, 18.4, 20.3} cm) foot circumference, unstretched.

The “to fit” measurements are given based on the amount of stretch that I like for the stitches to have – that is, well-defined but not “too” stretched out. This is a personal preference. I recommend choosing the same size or number of cast-on sts that you would choose for vanilla or ribbed socks.

The designer has a ball of foot measurement of 8.5” (21.5 cm) and leg measurement of 8.5” (21.5 cm) and chose a 64 sts sample. The designer typically wears 64-st vanilla socks.
