In December 2020, a friend sent a note looking for a knitter to replicate a Christmas stocking made by their grandmother for the whole family many years ago. There is a new family member, but Gramma Betty is no longer knitting.

This is a LARGE, top-down, garter stitch, short row heel stocking that is thick and squishy. The original stocking had a flap heel. I elected to use a short row heel for my version because it is what I know and I hate picking up stitches. You can use a flap heel on yours if you know that method better.

The original was made with 2 strands of yarn held double. This pattern is also. You could easily switch to a bulky yarn and achieve the same plush result. Using my postal scale, I wound each skein into 2 x 100g balls, and that is what I worked from to have two tangle-free sources.

If you are a new knitter dreaming of making your own socks, this is a perfect pattern to learn on because it is so big and forgiving. This is also a chance to practice your magic loop skills on a large project.
