It is a sister design to my Grass Whispers Pullover, which features a similar pattern of cables and slip stitch ribbing on the mock neck. The beanie is worked bottom up in the round.

The pattern is written for four sizes to fit both adults and children. Sizing can be further adjusted by using bigger/smaller needles if necessary.

Sizes

  • The pattern is written for four sizes 1 (2, 3, 4) with a finished unstretched circumference of ca. 40 (46.5, 53.5, 60) cm / 15.75 (18.25, 21, 23.5) in.
  • Finished length from cast-on edge to top 28 (29, 31, 32) cm / 11 (11.5, 12, 12.75) in and ca. 21 (22, 23, 24) cm / 8.5 (8.75, 9, 9.25) in with folded brim. Length can be easily adjusted.

I like my hats closely fitted, that’s why the sample is shown in size 1 on a model with 54 cm (21.25 in) head circumference.

Yarn
Approx. 75 (95, 115, 140) g or 1 (1, 2, 2) skeins of Harverst Hues yarn from John Arbon Textiles, 65% organically-farmed Falklands Merino and 35% Devon Zwartbles with approx. 200 m (219 yds) per 100 g skein, shown in colourway Russet;
or ca. 150 (190, 230, 280) m // 164 (208, 252, 306) yds of any worsted/light aran weight yarn with a matching gauge. Make sure to have extra yarn if you wish to add a pompom.

Needles and notions

  • 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.0 mm (US 6) 40-60 cm (16-24 in) circular needles;
  • 4.0 mm (US 6) cable needle (optional),
  • 4.0 mm (US 6) double pointed needle (optional for shaping the crown),
  • one stitch marker;
  • a tapestry needle or a crochet hook to close the top and weave in the ends.

Gauge

  • 24 sts & 28 rnds in 10 cm (4 in) on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles measured over 1x1 ribbing worked in the round after blocking;
  • 25 sts & 28 rnds in 10 cm (4 in) on 4.0 mm (US 6) needles measured over the pattern of cables and slip stitch ribbing worked in the round after blocking.
  • Adjust the needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge or modify the finished circumference.
