This is a fun pattern for confident beginners, so pick your yarn and let’s get knitting!

The main stitches we will be using are knit, purl, knitting two stitches together, doing a yarn over, drop-stitch, and slip-slip-knit.

If these stitches are new to you, there are links in the pattern to tutorial videos so you can learn and practice in a swatch before you get started.

Yarn
This pattern uses 10 ply (Worsted, Aran) yarn, but you can also use DK (Double Knit / 8 ply) if you’d like a lighter-weight hat.

The yarn I used in the pictured hat is 10 ply yarn from Moonrise Yarn Co. in Drip Drop Drip colourway.

You will need about 160 metres / 175 yards for the standard hat, and more if you decide to add extra rows.

Needles
We will be knitting in the round, using two needle sizes, a smaller one for the band and a larger one for the main body of the hat.

Small: 4mm / US 6 with a 40cm / 15” cable
Large: 5mm / US 8 with a 40 cm / 15” cable

Sizing
The finished circumference is about 61cm / 24” for the standard pattern, and there’s a larger size for bigger heads.

You can change this pattern to make it longer to suit your style.
