I designed this top while on a summer road trip through the East Coast, as we made our way up to Vermont to visit the summer camp where my husband and I first met many years ago. The warm, breezy Vermont days, rolling green hills, and golden light were all swirling in my mind as I knit — and those memories wove their way into this piece. I wanted to create something simple and classic, with a modern twist: clean stockinette, bold colorwork, and a cozy rolled collar to tie it all together. It’s the kind of knit that makes you feel confident, creative, and well put-together — whether you pair it with jeans, a skirt or layer it under a jacket.

The top is worked from the bottom up, with a fitted shape and flattering armhole shaping that dips just slightly for a modern silhouette. It’s easily customizable for different lengths — whether you love a cropped fit or something longer that offers more coverage. And of course, there’s the colorwork fade: it’s rhythmic and fun to knit, and a great way to play with color, whether you use scraps or a curated palette.

This pattern is written for a lighter worsted weight yarn, but a heavy DK weight yarn that matches gauge will also work beautifully.

This top is designed to be worn with approximately 6” (15 cm) of negative ease for a fitted silhouette. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, consider sizing up.
