“Gruvy”
Fair Isle hat by
Woolly Hooligan designs

This hat is awesome. Inspired by Andrea Rangel and her charted flower from the “Alter knit” dictionary. Thank you Andrea.
I envisioned this flower could be this amazing fabric, simply stacked on top of each other. This reminds me of a mosaic tile.
I simply love repetitious, geometric and flowy designs. The “white” space is as cool as the “pattern” itself. I often am drawn to that negative space.
My hubby reminded me it looks like a pattern on his moms 60’s couch, ha-ha, therefore it was fondly named “Gruvy” as in groovy 60’s.

I discovered fair isle recently and adore it. The possibilities are endless.
This yarn is beyond divine. Silk and merino mix is soft and cozy. It has to be snuggled to fully understand. Slight silk shine defines the stiches beautifully.
Fino being a fingering yarn, fair isle makes it a nice, dense and cozy fabric. It well suited for an amazing hat, showing off the pattern in the most magnificent way.

Gauge: 32 st in 34rows in 4-inch /10 cm sample worked in charted colorwork.

Yarn: Manos del Uruguay Fino (1 skein of each) fingering weight

Colour A: background about 250 yards (Filigree)

Colour B: accent about 200 yards. (Silhouette)

Needles: Size 4 (3.5 mm) US 16-inch circulars are best, also DPN’s in the same size for decreasing. Darning needle.

Finished measurements: 20 inches circumference at rib, 11 inches height
Meant to be worn with no ease, or a little ease as corrugated ribbing is not highly flexible. It has about 1 inch “give”.
One size fit most, on average size adult head.
