Guernsey Girl for children is a classic, wearable, little cardigan that could be worn with most outfits. It is great in a woolen yarn, but could be as lovely in a cotton quality.

Construction The cardigan is worked top-down and seamlessly. The upper back is worked from a provisional (or tradtional) cast-on to underarms. Fronts are worked from the shoulders of the back down to underarms. Back and fronts are joined and worked in one piece to bind-off. Button bands are integrated in the knitting. Sleeves are worked top-down and in-the-round from picked-up sts. Collar is worked from picked-up and spared sts.
The neckline could also be worked as a narrow rib, instead of the collar.

SizesFinished chest, after washing/blocking: Size 1: 3 - 6 months 47cm/18.5” /Size 2: 6months– 1 yr 52cm/20” /Size 3: 1 yr – 2 yrs 57cm/22.5” / Size 4: 2 yrs – 3 yrs 62.5cm/24.5” / Size 5: 4 yrs – 5 yrs 67.5cm/26.5” / Size 6: 6 yrs– 7 yrs 72.5cm/28”
Please note that children sizes varies a lot. To choose size I recommend that you measure the chest of the child and add an ease of approximately 5cm/2”.

Materials I used Rowan Cashmere to work the cardigan. This yarn is of DK weight, and comes in balls of 25gr/0.88oz and 75m/82yards. You will need 4/4/5/6/6/8 balls to work the cardigan.
Needles: Circular (or straight) needles, size 3.5mm/US4 and 3mm/US2.5 to work the body and collar. Dpns, size 3.5mm/US4 and 3mm/US2.5 to work the sleeves. Needle size is a suggestion only, you need to check gauge!

Gauge 24 sts and 34 rows in stockinette st = 10x10cm/4x4”.

The pattern The pattern guides you through the knit in a comprehensible way. All measurements are in cm’s as well as inches.
All necessary stitch-counts are given. The Guernsey-pattern is charted. There is a schematic.

Knitting skills Provisional cast-on (this is optional, you might also start from a traditional cast-on). Reading a chart.
Iincreases by m1l and m1r. Decreases by ssk and k2tog. There are no difficult sts involved.
