The Gwynver Sweater is a modified drop shoulder sweater worked top-down, both flat and in the round. The pattern features a simple and elegant cable motif down the centre of the front, back, and sleeves, which is framed by double moss stitch. The collar is made distinct from the body sections by a lateral braid.

You will begin by casting on stitches for the back panel, which is shaped with leaning increases on the right and wrong sides of the work. You will also establish the cable motif here. The underarms are shaped with additional increases for an improved fit. When the back yoke is complete, you will pick up and knit stitches for the left and right shoulders in turn, where you will also establish the cable motif for your chosen size. When the shoulders have been worked, you will connect them with some new stitches to form the front panel, which will be worked to mirror the back.

When the front yoke is complete, you will join the body in the round and continue to work the remaining length as established. You will then apply the collar, which is decorated with a lateral braid, and then pick up and knit stitches to form each sleeve in turn. The sleeves feature a modified version of the main cable motif. Alternatively, you can work a few rounds in rib to make a Gwynver Vest.

Please note that the cable motif is fully charted, and you will need to be able to work from charts to follow this pattern.


Materials and Fit

Notions: 4.5 mm / US 7 circular needles with 40-, 60-, and 80-cm / 16-, 24-, and 32-in cords; 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needles with 40- and 80-cm / 16- and 32-in cords. If you’re making one of the larger sizes, you may also find it helpful to have both needles with a 100-cm / 40-in cord.

You will also need some ring stitch markers, your preferred stitch holder (i.e., scrap yarn, a set of spare needles, or a cord), a darning needle, and you may find some clip-on markers helpful to track your work.

Tension: 18 stitches x 27 rows/rounds = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 in in double moss stitch on 4.5 mm / US 7 needles. It is very important to block your work with this project.

Sizing and ease: The Gwynver Sweater Sweater has a recommended positive ease of 7.5-12.5 cm / 3–5 in for Sizes A-H, and 2.5-12.5 cm / 1-5 in for Sizes I-L. However, if you wanted less ease, you would be welcome to choose a smaller size relative to your chest measurement and vice versa.

Yarn: For Sample 1, I used The Raw Wool Company Soft As Sea Mist DK (70% British Romney Lamb & 30% British Dorset; 100 g = 220 m / 249 yds). For Sample 2, I used Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino / 100% merino wool; 50 g = 125 m / 137 yds) in the shade Dove Blue. For Sample 3 (modified to be a vest), I used Middle Campscott Farm Organic Shetland DK Wool (100% wool; 50 g = 110 m / 120 yds in the shade Fawn.

In The Raw Wool Company Soft As Sea Mist, this works out to be 6 (6) 6 (6-7), 7 (7) 7 (7), 7-8 (8) 8 (9) x 100 g hanks of yarn.

If you want to use a different yarn, I estimate that you will need approximately 1200 (1250) 1280 (1320), 1370 (1410) 1470 (1510), 1550 (1640) 1730 (1880) m / 1320 (1370) 1400 (1500), 1500 (1550) 1610 (1660), 1700 (1800) 1900 (2060) yds of a heavy DK or worsted-weight yarn.

If you did want to modify your Gwynver Sweater to be a vest, I estimate that you will need approximately 790 (830) 860 (910), 940 (990) 1060 (1100), 1150 (1230) 1320 (1470) m / 870 (910) 950 (1000), 1030 (1090) 1160 (1210), 1260 (1350) 1450 (1610) yds of a heavy DK or worsted-weight yarn

Assuming you would like a finish similar to my first sample, I would recommend using a non-super wash, woollen-spun yarn or a dry and relatively lofty worsted-spun yarn.
