This cosy cabled hat was designed as a Scottish handfasting present. I designed it to be warm enough for Scottish winters, and stretchy enough to fit a range of sizes. This hat is knitted brim-up with a ribbed cuff which is then folded over itself before starting the cable pattern.

The size of the hat is altered to fit by changing the length of the rib stitch section rather than increasing the overall width of the hat. I’ve included instructions on how to make a great fit. The hat is designed to fit adults and teens.

Gauge: 19 sts and 26 rows = 10cm x 10cm (4” x 4”) in st st on 4.5 mm needles after blocking

I’ve used West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft Aran for the hats in the photos. Each hat used less than 1 skein of this yarn.
Other yarns that test knitters used include:
Red Heart Soft Solid, 160 metres/174 yards
Cascade 220, 150 metres /164 yards
