As part of the String of Hearts cablework series, this pullover revisits traditional cable knitting through a modern lens. The design is worked top-down and features semi-set-in shoulders at the back, offering structure while maintaining a comfortable, wearable fit. An optional double-folded neckband provides a polished finish and added warmth. This design is intended to be gender-neutral, with proportions and styling suitable for a wide range of body types and personal aesthetics.

While I love classic Aran garments with dense, tightly worked cables, I often find them heavy and less practical for layering. For this design, I chose yarns and a gauge that create a more relaxed fabric—offering warmth without weight—making the sweater easy to wear under a coat or on its own during spring and fall. The use of two-tone or subtly heathered yarns further enhances the depth and clarity of the cable motifs, highlighting their texture without overpowering the garment.

CONSTRUCTION
The garment is worked top-down, beginning at the back neck. The back is shaped first to complete the armholes. Stitches are then picked up from each shoulder to work the shoulders and neckline, followed by the front, which is worked to the same length as the back. The front and back are then joined to work the body in the round. All cables are worked from the right side.

To improve fit and proportions across sizes, the pattern is graded into three size groups, each with a slightly different cable panel arrangement to minimize overly wide side panels. Reverse stockinette side panels create a subtly relaxed silhouette, while semi–set-in shoulders at the back provide comfortable shoulder shaping.

The neckline is fairly fitted, with a choice of single or double-folded neckband inspired by traditional cable sweaters. The pattern includes beginner-friendly written instructions for the overall structure, along with tips and charts for detailed sections.
