The Hebrides are a group of islands off the wild and rocky west coast of Scotland. Fifteen hundred years ago the islands were at the heart of a Celtic society. This scarf takes inspiration from the artwork of this time by repeating one of the simplest Celtic knot designs to represent the chain of islands within a sea of double moss stitch. The knot is worked in lace, using a combination of yarn overs and simple decreases to trace the strands. I invite you to dive in and go on your very own island-hopping adventure.

Techniques:
Knit, purl, yo, single and double decreases.

Measurements:
One size (approximately 25cm/10 inches by 150cm/60 inches).

Yarn:
Malabrigo Worsted (100% wool; 210yd/192m per 3.5oz/100g skein); colour: Autumn Forest; 2 skeins.

Needles:
1 set 5mm/US8 needles for working flat.

Notions:
Yarn needle, wire or pins blocking.

Tension:
18 sts and 24 rows to 10cm/4inches in stocking stitch.

Pattern notes:
The basic knot motif is given in three different sizes, each knot will flow from one to another. This gives you the option to fully customise the scarf: you can work the knots in any order or work all the same sized knots if you would prefer. Some ideas for personalising this pattern can be found on my blog. Please note any changes you make will change the length of the scarf and may require more yarn.

Special Stitches
Sl1, k1, psso: slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped st over. Slip one stitch as if to knit with yarn in back, k1, pass the slipped stitch over. If you prefer you can use ssk (slip slip knit) instead.

Dd: double decrease. Slip one stitch as if to knit with yarn in back, k1, pass the slipped stitch over. Place the knit stitch back on the main needle, lift the second stitch on the main needle over the first stitch and off the needle, then return original stitch to working needle.
