Here’s a hat and collar duo that will keep you toasty warm in any weather.

The hat is worked in the round in a two-colour cartridge belt rib stitch with reversible decreases at the crown.

This hat has just enough negative easy to make it comfortable to wear. It will sit tight on your head but it won’t squeeze you leaving marks on your forehead.

The shaping looks equally nice on both sides of the hat, making this hat fully reversible.

To make sure the colour pattern is consistent when the brim is folded up, we switch the colours between the brim and the body of the hat.

The collar has a snug fit at the neck. This kind of fit combined with a gorgeously textured stitch pattern makes it warm even on the coldest and windiest of days.

For added protection, pull the cuff up to cover the bottom part of your face when the weather gets particularly unpleasant.

To keep the colour pattern consistent, we also switch the colours at a certain point, making this collar fully reversible – in a lighter shade on one side, and in a darker shade when we turn the collar inside out.

As an added detail, the cast on and bind off edges are worked in the same colour and are completely identical.

Helsinki hat and collar are unisex, and you can easily make them in four sizes – from a size that fits a toddler to an extra large adult size.

SIZE

Toddler (child, adult, large adult).

Hat: to fit head circumference 46 (52, 56, 60) cm / 18 (20.5, 22, 23.5)”

Collar: circumference at the top 30 (34, 36, 39) cm / 11.75 (13.5, 14.25, 15.25)”

Instructions are given for the smaller size, with the larger sizes in parentheses.

YARN

Any wool yarn that has the equivalent of 150 m / 164 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz (it is consistent with DK weight that is marked by digit 3 on the yarn label). The pattern has a link to a tutorial that explains how to substitute yarn in three simple steps.

You will need:

For hat: 200 (230, 250, 270) m / 220 (250, 280, 300) yds of each of the two colours.

For collar: 210 (240, 270, 280) m / 230 (260, 290, 310) yds of each of the two colours.

Hat and collar shown in the photo are knitted with Knitca Delight yarn (100% superwash merino wool) in pearl and pale taupe colours.

The colour pattern looks great in colours that are close in shade. Feel free to choose more contrasting colour combinations for hats and collars made for kids and fun-loving adults.

NEEDLES

Circular needles in size 5.5mm (US size 9).

You can use shorter circular needles to make the body of the hat, and then switch to double pointed needles when you start shaping the crown.

Or, you can work on longer circular needles (80 cm / 32” or longer) using the magic loop method.

NOTIONS

Crochet hook in size 5mm (H-8) for casting on, a row counter, a safety pin or a locking stitch marker, a wool needle for finishing.

GAUGE

21 stitches x 33 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in cartridge belt rib pattern with the fabric relaxed.

The pattern is supported by eleven tutorials that explain and demonstrate knitting methods used in these projects.
