This dragon-scale inspired jumper began life before Covid as “Sue’s Jumper” and was finally launched in it’s final form at Wonderwool 2025.

One of our regular customers wanted to re-make an old sweater which she no longer had the pattern for. Rather than creating a copy, we used the old design as a springboard for ours, changing the overall shape and neck and shoulder inserts. The twisted stitches mimic the shape of the v-neck and reminds us of dragon scales which is absolutely perfect for a business based in Wales. You may need to travel a bit further west though to find actual dragons!

We also created the Dragon’s Egg Hat to use as a tension swatch which is available on Ravelry here

The jumper has an all over stitch pattern, with raglan sleeves and reverse stocking stitch neck and shoulder details. It is knitted flat and seamed and has a choice of a rolled edge round neck or a folded polo (turtle) neck.

The pattern is written with supporting charts and is suitable for intermediate knitters who can keep a stitch pattern correct when shaping and understand how to follow “at the same time” instructions.

Sizing
Available in 5 sizes 1(2,3,4,5) with finished chest size 36(40,44,48,52) inches / 91.5(101.5,112,122,132) cm
We recommend making a size that gives you 2 to 4 inches / 5 to 10 cm positive ease

Materials
This jumper suits a smooth chunky wool yarn in a plain colour to show off the stitch pattern.
We used West Yorkshire Spinners Re:Treat chunky, a 100% wool roving style yarn that comes in a good range of colours.

A good budget alternative would be Stylecraft Softie Chunky

Yarn needed for size 1(2,3,4,5):
For small rolled edge round neck: 700 (830,980,1050,1210) metres or 5 (6,7,8,9) balls of Re:Treat
For folded polo neck: 820 (950,1100,1170,1340) metres or 6 (7,8,9,10) balls of Re:Treat

6.0mm and 5.5mm needles (or needle size to achieve tension over pattern plus needles 0.5mm smaller for ribs)

One stitch marker

Tension (Gauge)
It is important to match both stitch and row tension over the twisted stitch pattern as the garment size is worked to a given number of rows, not to a measured length. We strongly recommend making a tension swatch in pattern over at least 3 repeats horizontally and 2 repeats vertically to give an accurate measurement. We used an extra ball of yarn to make the Dragon’s Egg hat and used that as the tension swatch.

Required tension in twisted stitch pattern using 6mm needles is 16 stitches x 22.5 rows

For reference, the stocking stitch tension using 6mm needles is 15.5 stitches x 20 rows. Note that the tension given on the ball band on Re:Treat is using 6.5mm needles
