It’s no surprise the Amsterdam herons flew right into my knitting patterns. You can see them everywhere around here. Awaiting their turn on the Albert Cuyp Market after the fish market stalls have left, or when I dogwalk my Sindy. For the story behind this design you can read my blog!

In this pattern the colorwork charts of the herons are the most important features, while the shape of the sweater is very basic: two flat knitted big squares joined at shoulders and sides, with two ribbed cuffs and a more elaborate ribbed turtleneck to top it off elegantly.

The size is actually: one size fits all. The number of contrast colors is optional. For my version I used three contrast colors.

Difficulty level
Intermediate.

Yarn
The yarn I used is an organic blend of wool and linen from a small company in Germany certified with Ökotex Std 100 (purchased at yarn shop Weldraad in Amsterdam), 300 m/100g (328 yds/100g). Colors: 6 skeins dark grey (MC), 1 skein off white (CC1), 1 skein dark blue (CC2), 1 skein yellow (optional) (CC3).
There are plenty of other yarn options, the gauge is based on a tight knitted DK weight.

Needles
3 mm (US 3) needles, 3mm circular needle of 40 cm (16 in) and DPNs or longer circular needle for magic loop for ribbing neck and sleeves.

Gauge
28 sts x 29 rows/rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4x4 in) in stockinette after blocking (tightly knitted fabric is preferable to facilitate colorwork knitting).

Size Information
Height 75 cm (29,5 in), width from sleeve to sleeve 110 cm (43 in). One size fits all, though pattern includes instructions how to widen cuffs or lengthen poncho.

Materials
Stitch holders or waste yarn, stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking tools.

Happy knitting!
