For windy summer days or in-between weather… Here is a wonderfully straightforward and great-fitting staple that every kid needs in their wardrobe. The tee version of my best-selling Hyphen cardigan is finally available!

PATTERN NOTES:

This garment is knit seamlessly from the top down, featuring textured accents around the yoke. The yoke features a hybrid circular/raglan construction for an optimal fit. Short rows can also be worked if desired (optional, detailed instructions provided). The yoke is worked in the round to the underarms, then the sleeves are put on hold, and the body is worked in the round to the hem. Lastly, the sleeve stitches are returned to the needles and worked in the round.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, binding off.

SIZES:

3mo (6mo, 12mo, 18mo // 2yo, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo, 10yo)
To fit chest: 16 (17, 18, 19 // 21, 23, 25, 26.5, 28) inches or 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48.5 // 53.5, 58.5, 63.5, 67.5, 71) cm.
Garment chest at underarms: 19 (19.75, 21, 21.75 // 24, 26.25, 28.25, 29.75, 32) inches or 48 (50, 53.5, 55.4 // 61, 65.5, 72, 75.5, 81.5) cm.
I recommend choosing a size based on the recipient’s actual chest measurement instead of the age label. You can also choose a size according to how much ease you’d like the garment to have.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 225 (250, 275, 325 // 350, 400, 450, 550, 650) yds or 206 (229, 251, 297 // 320, 366, 411, 503, 594) meters of dk to sport weight yarn (8-5 ply).
Note: I used Symfonie’s Flora (Deep Madder colorway), which is unfortunately no longer available, for the rust-colored sample (no short rows version) and Malabrigo’s Arroyo (Pearl Ten colorway) for the oatmeal colored sample (short row version). Be careful with non-stretchy yarns (e.g. 100% cotton) as there may not be enough stretch for the neckline.

NEEDLES:

  • US 6 or 4 mm circular needle (or size needed to match stockinette stitch gauge). Length: 16-inch or 40 cm and 32- inch or 80 cm.

  • matching double-pointed needles or long circular needle if using magic loop technique for sleeves.

  • US 4 or 3.5 mm circular needle (or 2 sizes smaller than above) of the same two lengths for neckline and bottom ribbing.

  • matching double-pointed needles or long circular needle if using magic loop technique for sleeve cuff ribbing.

NOTIONS:

  • 5 stitch markers (using a different color for the BOR m)
  • tapestry needle
  • 2 pieces of scrap yarn or stitch holders

GAUGE:

22 sts x 32 rounds = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch in the round after blocking using larger-diameter needle.
Please adjust your needle size if needed to achieve gauge.
