Anne’s teenage heart turned to ice after the death of her husband Frederick William, Duke of Courland. Her uncle, Peter the Great, would not let her return to court nor marry again for the sake of the Empire. When she became Empress of Russia, she built a glistening palace of ice and torture, mirroring what I could only imagine she had endured in her youth. It was magnificent, but filled with horrors. On the outside of the palace were ice sculptures, and the inside was fully furnished - including an icy nuptial chamber. That chamber was used to both humiliate and punish her court jester, once a prince, for getting married without her permission.
