This is a one-size fits all piece of drama! Size 10 needles and an interesting threaded stitch knit up super fast into a statement piece fit for any occasion.

I used 4.25 skeins of yarn. That 5th one is iffy, but I have another pattern coming soon to use that one up, in case you have lots leftover. If you want to play chicken, buy 4. Not me. I’d buy the 5th.

I encourage you to buy Skeincocaines yarn because it’s just darn special. She has an eye for color, trends, and what works. Hand dyed in SW Virginia, this yarn will elevate your project to new heights of beauty. If you can’t use hers, any self-striping worsted weight will do. I love the way the threaded stitch gives a 3-dimensional effect to the yarns. Try it and you’ll see.

Wanna know where this pattern came from? Read below for the inspiration:

There I was, staring at this self-striping zebraish yarn wondering, “What the heck am I going to make with that?” I had a bag full of a sweaters quantity of yarn, and no idea what to do with it. Challenge accepted.

I love a good challenge, and Skeincocaine has been challenging me since before I even met her. It started in Blacksburg, VA at her LYS Mosaic. My favorite place to visit. She offered to hire me, but I lived an hour away and had 3 small children. But the seed was planted.

Later, Skeincocaine opened a store in my hometown. I jumped on that bandwagon real fast. I had schoolage kids and was ready to do something else with my time besides mess with them. It took her a few days, but she gave me a chance. I learned so much, so rapidly. I thought I already knew a lot about yarn. Nope. Lots more to learn.

I worked for Ms. Skeincocaine for 6 years until she sold her store. I learned about marketing, margins, loss leaders, turnover, front end caps, sell throughs, not to use exclamation point too often…. All the business stuff as well as the yarn stuff. Folks began to trust me. If I told them something would work, it would. I became good at changing yarn weights to fit a customers specific needs. I studied lots about color theory and loved putting yarns together with patterns for specific patrons. In short. I grew.

After my cousin, The Surgeon, hired me away from Wool Workshop, I missed my love of yarn, knitting, and the community. Skeincocaine and I had stayed in touch and she challenged me again… this time to become a designer. Bound by anxiety and fear and all the what ifs….. I gave it a shot and Scrummy Hat was born.

This ones for you Gina. You are an iconic inspiration to me. Thank you for everything, including the bag of black and white yarn that evolved into a wrap you could wear on a night in NYC.
