The Ilana Top is knit from the top down using the diagonal shoulder technique (also known as the European or Japanese method), which creates a beautiful, flowing shoulder line and comfortable fit.
The tiny cables create texture and elegance, and they’re surprisingly fun to knit since they don’t require a cable needle! All shaping is gently built into the pattern, so it flows smoothly without interrupting the design. The armholes and neckline are finished with a double edge for a clean, polished look.

Yarn:
The top shown in the photos is knitted with Rosarios4 Madragoa, 100% bourette silk, 50 g = 200 m (218 yards), color 27.

Other options: Lana Grossa Setapura, Austerman Magic Silk, Knitting for Olive Pure Silk, Tynn Line Sandnes Garn, Drops Safran, Summerlite 4ply by Rowan.

Any of these yarns can be used for this pattern, but the fabric density will vary. Yarns with higher meterage will produce a lighter, thinner fabric with flatter cables, while those with lower meterage will create a denser, thicker fabric with more textured, voluminous cables.

Yarn consumption, including yarn for a 10x10 cm (4x4”) swatch:
size 1: 550 meters (601 yards)
size 2: 600 meters (654 yards)
size 3: 800 meters (875 yards)
size 4: 1000 meters (1094 yards)
size 5: 1200 meters (1312 yards)

Needles and notions:
• 3-3.5 mm (US 2½-4) circular needles 60 cm (23¾“) length cable for the main pattern.
• 2.25-2.5 mm (US 1-1½) circular needles 60 cm (23¾”) length cable for edges.
• Crochet hook 2,5 mm (US C/2), stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle.

Gauge (after blocking):
26 stitches x 31 rows = 10 cm (4”) in the Cable Pattern (Chart 1) on 3-3.5 mm (US 2½-4) size needles.

There’s no need to try adjust your gauge and make the fabric too see-through, if you get more rows in 10 cm (4”), as long as it’s no more than 36 rows. The pattern includes instructions for adjusting if your row gauge is different.
