If you are a fan of a certain medieval-fantasy series, you may recognize the name “Ironborn”. Inspired by this show, these gauntlets / mitts look like something any Greyjoy from the Iron Islands might be seen wearing. We’d like to think that Theon or Yara would appreciate their warmth and dexterity as they sail off on new adventures. The combination of tiny cables and ribbing also loosely resembles the tentacles on the House Greyjoy sigil -- the Kraken!

This pattern includes instructions for making the pictured fingerless mitts/ gauntlets using a mid-gauge knitting machine. It can be knitted using sport yarn (for a lighter weight / looser knit) or DK yarn (for a heavier weight / denser knit). The pattern can be easily resized smaller or larger by omitting or adding cable pattern repeats. Instructions are included. The pattern can be modified to make either gauntlets (wrist warmers, pulse waters) or fingerless mitts.

This is a teaching pattern, including many pages of detailed descriptions and photos. It is suitable for machine knitting beginners and is designed for mid-gauge knitting machines such as the Silver Reed LK-150. Although instructions are geared toward the LK-150, other mid-gauge machines can be utilized, but you will need to know the different settings for your machine (for example, Bond knitters use keyplates rather than setting tension dials).

Although this pattern length is very long (19 pages), you may not need to refer to the entire document. There is a short “abbreviated printable instructions” section which summarizes the pattern down to just two pages for more advanced machine knitters.

For those who are beginners or would like more help, additional detailed instructions, photos, and tutorials on cabling and ribbing are also included.

There is a bonus pattern included near the end of the document for making a matching pair of boot toppers / leg warmers

This is a 1-skein project (100 gram ball of yarn).
