Wikipedia says that January was actually not named after the god “Janus” but it is a common misconception. Janus is the god of beginnings and is usually depicted as having two faces. I gave my gnome’s hat two tassels to represent that.

You will receive three files:

  • interlocking crochet pattern and one-page chart (81 x81)
  • overlay mosaic crochet pattern and an X-marked chart (81 x 81)
  • overlay mosaic crochet pattern using an adjusted X-marked chart (77 x 77)

Originally, the gnomes were drawn for interlocking crochet and then I used the same chart to create overlay mosaic crochet instructions. The “adjusted mosaic” version is another overlay mosaic crochet option; the interlocking mesh dots and extra border lines have been removed.

The Locked Filet Mesh (LFM) interlocking crochet method uses only chain spaces and double crochets to create a mesh; two colors are worked alternately which creates the pattern.

Mosaic crochet is single crochet and double crochet stitches. The double crochet stitches cover some of the other color’s single crochet stitches to create the design. My patterns instruct you to cut your yarn at the end of each row. The back is striped but often gives a faint impression of the pattern on the front (sort of like illusion knitting). See an example here.
