Janus was the Roman god who presided over beginnings and endings, entrances and exits, and was represented by a two-faced image.

This lacy pattern satisfied my quest for a fully-reversible (two-faced), rectangular scarf, one that could be casual or dressy, and especially, has patterns which appear upside right on both ends. My modifications to an old Estonian stitch combination add shape as well as ease of knitting. The finished scarf has eyelets along each long edge to compliment and unify the two lacy pointed ends suggestive of the beard of Janus.

The piece can easily be adjusted in width and/or length to suit the knitter. The needles could also be a different size to make the lacy eyelets show off more. Of course than it might take more than one skein of yarn. The wine-coloured version was done over more stitches and finer yarn with the same needles. It was a prototype and does not reflect the final pattern exactly.

The subtle denim Tree Yarn is soft to the skin, and has a sheen highlighted by the garter stitch construction
