Jo, the creative rebel.
She is ambitious, feisty, non-conforming, and fiercely loyal to her family.
She sells her beautiful hair for train fare, so that her mother can go to their sick father in Washington D.C.
Her big dreams and independent spirit take her to New York City where she hones her writing craft, becomes a successful author, and finds love.
Her strength and beauty are bold.
The motifs on Jo’s mittens are sharp (like her wit) and resemble the steel-nibbed ink pens that she uses to write her stories. Her design foregoes the extra Latvian braid in spirit of her tomboy roots. The palm and thumb are covered in bold, geometric, diamond lattice patterns.
Size
8.25”/ 21 cm circumference around palm. 10.5”/ 27 cm long from tip to picot edge.

Notions
Tapestry needle, markers (2), removable marker (1), approximately 18”/ 46 cm slippery fingering weight waste yarn for CO and thumb sts, extra set of US 1 needles (or similar size).
Gauge
32 sts x 35 rows in 4”/10 cm in stranded colorwork from the Left or Right Hand chart pattern (pages 10-11). Gauge measurement is based on knitting in the round. Gauge can differ when knitting flat versus in the round. Measure item flat after blocking.
CONSTRUCTION
The Jo March Mittens are worked from the cuff to the fingertips. The cuffs begin with a provisional CO and the picot edge. The CO sts are moved to the spare needles, the CO edge is folded inside the rnd and up to meet the working rnd of sts on your main needle. The CO sts and the working sts are knit together to complete the picot edge. Next, a right leaning Latvian braid is worked. The hand colorwork is knit according to either the Left or Right Hand chart. The thumb sts are placed on hold while the hand is worked. When the hand is complete, thumb sts are transferred to from waste yarn to your needles and additional thumb sts are pu&k from the palm. Thumb sts are worked according to the Left or Right Thumb chart.
