Meg, the caring eldest.

She nurtures and guides her sisters in her mother’s stead.

A romantic dreamer who learns that happiness comes from authenticity and staying true to oneself.

She has a loving disposition that ultimately leads her to choose a marriage based on love rather than riches.

Her strength and beauty are classic.

For Meg’s mitts I chose a traditional Scandinavian star motif, simple patterning on the palms, and quilt-like elements to symbolize her ability to make a loving, beautiful home out of humble resources.

Size
8”/ 20 cm circumference around palm. 10”/ 25 cm long from tip to picot edge.

Supplies
Yarn
Kelbourne Woolens Camper (Fingering weight; 100% Wool, 50g/ 200 yds/ 183 m)
Sample shown in Orchid Heather (CC) and Natural (MC).

1 hank each in CC and MC

Alternative Yarn
Fingering weight, approximately: 135 yds/ 124 m in MC and 120 yds/ 110 m in CC.
Alternative yarn requirements are approximate estimates. Final quantities will be determined by your personal tension, any modifications you make to the pattern, and your specific yarn. Always have a little more yarn available than you think you’ll need.

Needles
US 1/ 2.25 mm, 32”/80 cm length for Magic Loop or 5 DPNs

Notions
Tapestry needle, markers (2), removable marker (1), approximately 18”/ 46 cm slippery fingering weight waste yarn for CO and thumb sts, extra set of US 1 needles (or similar size).

Gauge
32 sts x 35 rows in 4”/10 cm in stranded colorwork from the Left or Right Hand chart pattern (pages 12-13). Gauge measurement is based on knitting in the round. Gauge can differ when knitting flat versus in the round. Measure item flat after blocking.

CONSTRUCTION
The Meg March Mittens are worked from the cuff to the fingertips. The cuffs begin with a provisional CO and the picot edge. The CO sts are moved to the spare needles, the CO edge is folded inside the rnd and up to meet the working rnd of sts on your main needle. The CO sts and the working sts are knit together to complete the picot edge. Next, a right leaning Latvian braid is worked, followed by the Cuff colorwork chart, and a left leaning Latvian braid. The hand colorwork is knit according to either the Left or Right Hand chart. The thumb sts are placed on hold while the hand is worked. When the hand is complete, thumb sts are transferred to from waste yarn to your needles and additional thumb sts are pu&k from the palm. Thumb sts are worked according to the Thumb chart.
