Quilting is near and dear to my heart. It was my first fiber craft and the reason I ventured back into knitting after a long hiatus was because I had already read all the quilting books in our local library so I moved to the knitting books that were in the next section. Shoo Fly is a block I have always loved but I have never made a quilt with that one. I love how the blips of the colors give this knit a resemblance to calico fabric.

In the spirit of scrap quilts, this was knit completely from stash and leftovers. I collected all my partial skeins of light colored Simply Wool Aran to use along with a bag of Cestari Traditional 2-Ply in a contrasting dark color. This can also be knit with alternating background or motif colors (see sketches in last 2 photos)

Skills required
Long-tail cast-on
Slipping stitches
Picking up stitches (easy along a slipped stitch edge)
Icelandic bind-off

NOTE: This is not knit in squares and then seamed - it is knit in long (or longer) rows and then the final two borders are picked up and knit on. No seams!!

Materials
Approximately 2600 yards of aran-weight yarn – 1400 yards of the background color and 1200 of the motif color to knit sample as shown
US 9/5.5 mm needles or size needed to obtain gauge. A long circular works best because of the number of stitches
US 8/5 mm needles or whatever size gives you the same gauge in plain garter stitch
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
