Julia is a lovely introduction to stranded colour work for an intermediate level knitter. It’s a simple straight knit piece without shaping, and you’re only ever working with two different colours.

The scarf is knit in a single flat piece, which is joined down the long edge at the end to form a tube, leaving the ends open. The pattern is written for our colour combination as pictured.

When reading the colour charts remember to start at the bottom and work up, following the row numbers.

A row counter can be a handy tool to keep track of where you are. If you are using different colours from the ones in the chart it may be helpful to make a black and white copy of the charts and colour them in with your own colour combinations.

With a little bit of arithmetic this pattern can easily be adapted to a different size. And the basic pattern lends itself to creating your own experiments, using one chart to make arm or leg warmers for example, or widening one section to make a circular scarf.
