Make your own Kakapo, a beautiful and unique parrot species endemic to the fjords of southern New Zealand. The critically endangered Kakapo is the world’s only flightless parrot, the heaviest parrot, and perhaps the longest lived of bird species. Kakapo translates from Maori as “night parrot”, reflecting the nocturnal nature of this unusual bird. Part of the proceeds from all sales of this pattern will go to the Kakapo Recovery program led by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

The 49 page pattern includes detailed step-by-step photos and clear written instructions to make an amigurumi-style Kakapo. PLUS there is a 17 page printer-friendly TEXT ONLY version at the end of the pattern. This pattern has been fully tested by multiple testers. Includes yarn amounts and hook sizes to make a Kakapo using worsted weight yarn.

Recommended for INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCE SKILL LEVEL. This pattern uses basic crochet stitches and more complex stitches (detailed in the pattern glossary), as well as shaping to create the Kakapo face.

A finished Kakapo made using Worsted Weight yarn is approximately 15” long from beak to tail, 10” tall from head to foot, and 7” wide across the hips.

To make a Kakapo using Worsted weight yarn you will need:
230 yds Main Color yarn
54 yds Accent Color yarn
44 yds Beak Color yarn
G (4/4.25mm) crochet hook (or preferred amigurumi hook)
12mm or 15mm safety eyes
Poly-fil or other stuffing
18-gauge floral wire (4-5 pieces of 18-inch wire) or armature wire
Duct tape
Darning needle
Optional: 18mm claws (can be found on Amazon, Stitches and Whimsy on Etsy, or made using clay or other material)
