Kaleidoscope Jumper
Dear lover of colourful yarn, I am so happy to bring you this One Size, (44-inch chest) traditional Shetland Tree and Star motif jumper pattern, with contrasting Tree motif sleeves to make a winter woolly in a classic V neck design with a contemporary feel. It is a kaleidoscope of dancing colour to brighten up any cold day.
My Kaleidoscope jumper, is a celebration of pinks and blues initially inspired by the Cherry Blossom trees that festooned Sheffield in April but as knitting the bands of motifs developed, together, they created an overall kaleidoscope effect. So, the jumper named itself.
This is a 14-page pattern containing written instructions and 7 full colour charts. Some charts are enlarged so that they are easier to see, some fit to an A4 sheet so that you can see the overall effect. There is a link to my Instagram post on how to graft the sleeve and links to help you do the grafted shoulders and mitred V neck.
This is my most brave and perfect knitting design. As an independent designer, that has spent every day over 5 months designing, knitting, charting and writing this pattern, please do not share it with friends.
You will need 27 balls of Yarn: Jamieson & Smith, 2ply Jumper Weight, 4ply/fingering for this jumper. ALL colours are listed in the pattern when you buy it.
Needles for the body: - 1 x 80cm circular needle UK 2:75mm (US2) needles for the rib and one 120cm UK 3mm (US3) circular needle for the body of the jumper – PLUS you will need regular 3mm needles for when you start to knit and purl when the knitting is split at the underarm to make the front and the back separately unless you steek the jumper.
Needles for the sleeves: - You will need 40cm, 60cm and 80cm UK 3mm (US3) circular needles for the sleeves and could use 5 DPN’s needles to knit around the cuffs, if the knitting gets too tight on the circular. You will also need to have 2 x UK 3mm (US3) circulars if you are going to graft the top of the sleeve neatly into the armpit
Finished Size: - One size to fit UK size 8 – 14. Finished chest size 44 inches. Length from hem to shoulder is 23 ½ inches. Length from hem to under arm cast off 13 ½ inches. Length of sleeve including cuff is 22 inches (but the shoulders are dropped which makes the sleeves seem longer). This jumper can be made longer in the body or sleeve easily by simply adding one more band of motifs. Or, if you want to make the pattern slightly larger all over than the finished size above, then use 3.25mm UK needle for the body and sleeves. Swatch first for your gauge.
Gauge: - 34 rows and 32 stitches to 10 cm measured over the motif pattern using UK 3mm needles
Construction: - I knitted this jumper in the round to the armpit then I split it to knit the front and the back separately, or, if you choose, you can steek the arm holes and neck. After the body was knitted, I grafted the shoulders together. The shoulder seam falls after one full motif so that the garment looks neat at the finished shoulder line. The Tree sleeve is knitted separately then grafted into the armhole – see page 12 for explanation why I knitted it this way.

My Kaleidoscope Pattern has Tree sleeve charts only - I am releasing and add-on Tree and Star Sleeve Pattern with Sanquhar alphabet so that you have the option for Tree and Star sleeves and to add your initials and year of knitting into your piece. The Add-on pattern will be called Tree and Star Sleeve and will be out just after this pattern.
