This lace hat is named Kloes, which means trellis in Cornish, as the pattern is reminiscent of a woven wooden trellis.

Skill Level
This is an intermediate-advanced pattern, and may be time consuming for the size. The pattern is intricate.
Lace is worked on every other round, with a knit rest round in between.

This pattern is fully charted and written (English), and checkboxes are provided in the written pattern to keep track of rounds.

Needles
16” (40cm) circulars, DPNs, or long circulars for magic loop.

  • Size 5 (3.75mm) for ribbing
  • Size 8 (5mm) for a slightly slouchy body
  • Size 10 (6mm) for a very slouchy body

Gauge
16-20sts, 24-28 rounds in 4” (10cm) stockinette with larger needles, larger gauge makes a larger and slouchier hat

Size
Measured on ribbing

  • Adult small: 21” (53.3cm) around
  • Adult large: 24” (61cm) around

9”-11” (22.85-28cm) tall, depending on gauge

Fit
Slightly slouchy or slouchy. Fit affects height of the hat, where a smaller gauge will produce a more fitted hat and a larger gauge will produce a slouchier hat.

Size 8 (5mm) needles made a slightly slouchy hat while size 10 (6mm) needles made a very slouchy hat.

Yarn
120-150 yards (110-137m) worsted weight yarn depending on size and gauge.

This pattern works best with solid colors or subtle variegations, stripes or highly contrastive variegations will distract from the patterning. A second color can be used for the ribbing, in which case around 25-30 yards (23-27.5m) may be used for ribbing depending on size.

  • I used about 115 yards (105m) in Caron Simply Soft color Purple for the adult small size, slightly slouchy with size 8 (5mm) needles.
  • I used about 140 yards (128m) in Caron Simply Soft color Orchid for the adult large size, slouchy with size 10 (6mm) needles.
