Knitted Corset by Harper's Bazaar

Knitted Corset

Out of print. This pattern was available for free.

This pattern for an unboned corset in garter-stitch was given in the February 1, 1868 edition of “Harper’s Bazar.”

It is a vintage pattern, found on page 215 of the linked document, text only.

There is no sizing or gauge information given, but the 115 stitches at the center front give some idea of the intended gauge. The yarn called for is “coarse unbleached cotton.” In this case “coarse” refers to the texture of the yarn rather than the thickness of the yarn. An unbleached #10 crochet cotton on 0 or 00 needles would be a reasonable starting point.

Bust and hip gores are shaped with short rows and outlined with narrow stocking stitch bands. It closes at center front with buttons and buttonholes and has straps.

Fashion shaping cannot be expected from an unboned corset, but this garment should provide support comparable to unboned sewn stays.
