This is a gift box tutorial for intermediate knitters. This 3” tall, 2.5” square knitted box covers a large Hershey’s Kiss in a box. A knitted box can be any size but smaller boxes might look better due to the floppy nature of knitting. Knitting the box in one piece would result in 2 different edges: rounded and sharp. To keep all edges alike, I knitted 6 pieces and sewed them together. I used a smaller than normal needle (U.S. #4/3.5mm) to somewhat stiffen the pieces.
Half of a selvage stitch was sewn to the closest half of another piece’s selvage stitch for all seams. This resulted in half-selvage ridges on the outside of the box that could be embellished later.
To close the box, I chose a shaft button and chain-stitch button loop. A button and buttonhole, a large snap or a simple flap would also work. To sew seams, I used a length of doubled #12 pearl cotton. Don’t use sewing thread as this will saw through softer yarns over time. Make sure all woven-in tails end up on the inside of the box.
Idea: consider knitting this box in your or your giftee’s school color stripes!

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, k2tog, p2tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Optional: embellishing with buttons, beads or crochet edges around the top and/or sides

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any yarn/thread will work. Blocking is optional.
Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

I used 80 yards of Prism’s discontinued Jazz/Safari yarn and #12 pearl cotton for my box.
Yardage needed will vary with gauge and box size.
