Fern Flower Shawl

**

Inspired by Slavic folklore and the Polish legend of the fern flower, this shawl combines airy lace structure with warmth and softness. It’s designed to bring both comfort and a touch of mystery – to wrap yourself in an ancient story while enjoying a modern, wearable piece.

Construction

The shawl is knitted flat, from one short edge to the other.

A lace leaf motif runs along both edges,

The central panel features a stylized flower pattern inspired by the fern flower legend.

Both the cast-on and bind-off edges are symmetrical, giving the piece a balanced look. The pattern includes detailed instructions and modification tips – you can knit only the central motif as a narrow scarf, decorative panel, or table runner, or repeat the pattern more times for a wider, more dramatic wrap.

Finished size: approx. 55 cm wide × 200 cm long

Yarn

Designed in Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino (100% merino wool, 125 m / 50 g) for its softness, bounce, and crisp stitch definition that makes lace stand out beautifully.

Sport/DK weight yarn recommended

Works well close to the skin: soft, warm, non-itchy

Blocks wonderfully, opening up lace and keeping structure

Can be worked in one strand of DK, or combined yarns (e.g. merino + mohair)

Yarn requirements: approx. 950 m / 1040 yds

Sample used: 8 skeins Heavy Merino (without fringes)

If adding fringes, allow for ~½ skein extra.

Needles & Gauge

5 mm (US 8) needles

Choose a yarn that holds its shape – not too thin or drapey

Gauge is not crucial, but it will affect yardage and final size

Additional details

The pattern is fully written with charts included

Techniques: lace knitting, double thread cast-on, i-cord bind-off, optional fringes

Suitable for intermediate knitters who enjoy lace and textured details
