I wanted to make something cute for my daughter and I figured a cowl is harder to lose than a scarf. I made this for her for Valentine’s day. It is a stranded colorwork cowl with a repeated heart motif. It has an i-cord cast on and bind off for a nice edge that doesn’t curl.

This can be worked in two colors or a different color for every row of hearts. This would make a good introduction to stranded knitting since it only uses two colors at a time and there is no need to catch floats on the backside.

The pattern has three sizes:

S (4-10 years)
M (11-teen)
L (Adult)

Circumference
20” / 51 cm, 23.75”/ 60 cm, 27.5” /70 cm
Length
5.5” / 14 cm, 6” / 15.25 cm, 6” / 15.25 cm

Yarn:
Knit Picks Swish Worsted, superwash wool, (110 yards/101 meters per 50 gram /1.76 ounce skein

MC: 1,2,2 skeins or 85, 125, 145 yds/ 78, 114, 133 meters of worsted yarn

CC: Each row of hearts uses 8, 12, 15 yds/ 8, 12, 14 meters of worsted yarn.
Size S has four rows of hearts, sizes M, L have five rows of hearts.

Notes:

  • You can make your cowl longer, if you want. You will just need more yarn.
  • Since you are only using small amounts of each color, you may want to try over-dying some of it before knitting it, to get multiple colors from one skein.
