CHOOSING A CORD

The original rug was made with polyester braided cord weighing approximately 380 g per 100 m (3.8 g/m), or about 13.4 oz per 109 yd.

You do not need to use the same cord brand, exact diameter, or a cord with a core.

The most important characteristic is the construction of the cord. Look for a braided cord rather than a soft twisted macramé cord. Twisted macramé cords behave differently when crocheted and will not produce the same structure and stitch definition.

Depending on the manufacturer and country, a suitable material may be sold as braided cord, polyester cord, crochet cord, or simply cord.

The diameter stated by the manufacturer is only a general reference. Different cords labeled with the same diameter can vary considerably in actual thickness and density.

A more useful reference is the weight of the cord:

• approximately 3.8 g per meter
• approximately 380 g per 100 m
• approximately 13.4 oz per 109 yd

Your substitute does not need to match this number exactly. A somewhat lighter or heavier braided cord can also be used.

Please keep in mind that changing the cord may affect the finished size, texture, and total amount of cord required.
