Ptarmigans have always fascinated me, and I think they deserve a hat pattern! The Lagopus hat is a thin and slim fit beanie with a pattern featuring one single Ptarmigan - A rock ptarmigan hen during spring. Perfect for grouse hunters or bird lovers!

The hat can be made in 5 different sizes with a circumference ranging from 54-62 cm. Larger sizes can easily be added, but will not have been test-knitted. Let me know if you would like a larger than XL size and I will be happy to help re-do the pattern.

The yarn used it Sandnes Sunday which is a soft, thin merino yarn that are 50g balls of yarn with 235 meters each. This yarn is totally itch-free! If you prefer other options you can use any yarn that gives 28 stitches on 10 cm.

You will need circular needle 2,5-3 mm, depending on what gives you the correct gauge, and half a size smaller for the ribbing. If you are a loose knitter, you may need a size 2 mm. You will also need double-pointed needles while decreasing, and some stich-markers. And off course a tapestry needle and scissors to finish the top of the hat and sew in tails.

The hat can be made with two or three colors depending on your preference. The three colored version gives the opportunity to give the Ptarmigan a more natural look with white and brown plumage. The two colored version is great for alternative color choices.
The amount of yarn is one ball of Sandnes Sunday yarn in each color for all sizes. You will need one skein of each color for both for the two-colored and three-colored version. If you want to use leftover yarn, about 20-30 grams should be enough for the pattern colors in any size.

The pattern features diagrams like regular colorwork patterns, but in addition there is also a written description of the diagrams. I made this because I often knit on the run, and I find it a lot easier to just read small sentences describing what colors to use instead of counting and looking at a regular diagram. You can off course just follow the diagram as usual as well, but this gives the knitter an option to choose after preference.

I would love to see your finished work. Please use #lagopuslua if posting on Instagram.
