I saw an image of a gaiter in an 1884 London journal but instructions for the pattern on the instep weren’t included. So here’s my version of it with 8 pattern rows and a multiple of 4 stitches.
I posted a different pattern for the gaiter’s calf section as “Later, Gaiter I”.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

51 yards of Wool of the Andes Tweed yarn will make 10 inches of a 32-stitch swatch at gauge.
