The leaf scarf is partially inspired by a pattern I knit when I was in my teens: the baby aviator scarf by drops design. I just thought the way this keyhole scarf could be fastened around the neck to be absolutely brilliant. Years later, I had the idea to combine this design feature with my own aesthetic. And so the Leaf Scarf was born. This scarf has little to do with the one that inspired it, but the idea of fastening it around the neck is the similar. There is a loop in one of the leaf stalks and the other leaf can be slid though to make the scarf stay in place.

It is knit in the round in st st, so the main body section is great for mindless tv knitting Whereas the leaves and stalks need some more attention. But it is not overly complicated and i find it fun to knit.

I love this scarf a lot and I am basically wearing it non stop. It is soft, cozy and warm - but does not sit to close to the neck to make it uncomfortable. The leaves add just a touch of whimsy but without being overly kitschy. The length is easily adjusted to create a perfect fit for your neck.

Finished dimensions:

  • Short version: about 80cm from leaf tip to leaf tip, and used about 150m (but that might vary depending on your yarn choice and gauge).
  • Long version: about 140cm from leaf tip to leaf tip, used about 300m (but that might vary depending on your yarn choice and gauge).

Sizes:
The leaf scarf comes in two lengths, a long and a short version. The long version will wrap around your neck twice while the short version will only do so once (see photos for reference).

Yarn:
These scarves are knitted with Drops Lima, 50g / 100m (1.8oz / 109yards). You can substitute any yarn of similar weight/length. As this scarf can easily be adjusted in length, a slightly different yarn would also work.

Needle:
US 6 / 4mm or whatever needle fits your yarn and gauge.

Gauge:
21sts x 28 rows = 10 x 10cm

Skill level:
Eager beginner to intermediate

You should know how to…

  • knit in the round either with dpns, shorties or magic loop
  • work increases such as m1l, m1r
  • work decreases such as ssk and k2tog
  • how to use a provisional cast on

If you know most of these techniques , but are missing one or two: don’t worry, most of these are easily learned from a youtube video. This scarf might still be doable for you.

You will need:

  • 5 dpns size 4mm (or a circular needle 4mm or a shorty 4mm)
  • several st markers to mark where your sides are, one of them unique for your beginning of the round
  • some thread or a circular needle for the provisional cast-on
  • a needle to weave in the ends.
  • blocking equipment such as blocking mats or a towel
  • a measuring tape
